Introduction to Optical Communication

Optical communication is communication that uses light waves as the carrier. There are two main approaches to increasing the bandwidth of optical links: one is to boost the transmission rate per channel in optical fibers; the other is to increase the number of wavelengths transmitted over a single fiber, a technique known as wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). In fact, optical communication equipment is best suited for use over the final few kilometers of a network.

For optical communications, the underlying technology is essentially mature, yet business demand remains relatively insufficient. Take FTTH—the technology hailed as the “ultimate goal for broadband access”—as an example: its enabling technology, EPON, has already reached full maturity. However, since ordinary users do not require high bandwidth for their internet access, the commercial deployment of FTTH has been limited to only a few pilot regions. Yet in 2006, with the launch of triple-play services such as IPTV, the bandwidth provided by operators could no longer meet users’ demands for high-definition television. Consequently, the deployment of FTTH was put back on the agenda. Coincidentally, ASON offers flexible control over transmission networks and can provide personalized services to enterprise customers. As a result, many operators have been willing to make substantial investments in building ASON networks in order to develop and retain their enterprise clientele.
